of the things we heard from secretary clinton this week was her defensive viewing of ambassador susan rice who continues to come under fire from some republicans for comments she made on the attack in the u.s. consulate in benghazi. take a listen. >> susan rice has done a great job as our u.n. ambassador. she has been a stalwart colleague in a lot of the tough decisions that we've had to make. and certainly with respect to defending our national interests and national security at the united nations. >> so clinton is also going to testify on benghazi next week. what are the politics of all of this for secretary clinton? and are there risks for her here? >> i don't think there are necessarily risks for her here as long as she stays out of the whole fray of susan rice and congressional republicans. there's an awful lot going on on that score, but i tnk hillary clinton may be able to keep herself above all that. by the way, we keep expecting the white house for this rice situation to be resolved. we fully expect president clinton to make -- excuse me, president obama to make his announcement about

would love to talk to you about. let's start with susan rice. we saw and spent some time with her at the party. everywhere i go, people ask me: is the president going to nominate susan rice for secretary of state after what she's been through? >> i am not sure he wants that fight but he's got to -- if he does he want, he has to find something else for her to do, some other big job for her to do if he doesn't go that route. >> bill: i agree. first of all, i hope he -- percentage, i hope he does because i love to see him take on the fight and humil "john mccain and lindsey graham but at the same time, i have to say it's sort of not his style." right? >> right. no drama >> bill: a lot of people are thinking, why would he want to spend his political capitol, all he has got, a lot of what he's got the right now in the early days of his second term, second term on this. it seems he might look for something else for her to to do. >> what could that be? it would have to be a cabinet position. >> bill: national security adviseo. >> if janet non-gaapapalitan

. >> stephanie: cranky old john mccain wants to be on the committee to yell questions at susan rice. >> hey i wonder why. maybe it's because he's out of committees because he's termed out of all of the major committees. maybe that's because republicans have limitations on how long you can be on a committee and he's done all of them! >> stephanie: dick durbin was asked if he would be approved. he said he thinks so. some of the criticisms against her have been unwarranted adding she's an extraordinary person. john mccain wants to be able to -- huh? benghazi! >> stephanie: what do you think? everybody is saying is it going to be john kerry or susan rice? what do you think? >> i think susan rice is a great candidate for that. i think actually john kerry is really apparently wanted state but people have talked about him for secretary of defense. i think you could almost have a flak nearly as big with him going for defense as they would susan rice. purple band-aid brigade would be out again. then they would play his tapes

they see the republicans going after susan rice for four or five weeks or for three or four weeks. they now see the republicans seemingly standing in the way of a deal that could cost them in terms of their paychecks, money coming out of their paychecks at the expense of protecting rich people. that's what they see. that's what they take in. then they're asked, you know, who do you blame? there's only one obvious answer to most people, the republicans. they're going to bear the brunt of this. they are doing tremendous damage to their brand. and they have done tremendous damage to their brand over the last ten months during the election cycle and now during this negotiating process. >> they certainly have. i would only add a kauf yaccave stein, if republicans want to destroy their brand for good, make the term "republican" absolutely meaningless, go ahead and support tax increases without getting appropriate cuts, corresponding cuts. and this idea that some are suggesting that they just cave because it will make things easier, no. if they cave, raise taxes and get nothing in return of substa

: the likely short list to succeed secretary of state hillary clinton is politically charged. susan rice, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations, is thought to be a leading contender. some republicans have been highly critical of rice following the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. >> when they go after the u.n. ambassador, apparently because they think she's an easy target, then they got a problem with me. >> senator mccain. >> thank you very much, mr. secreta secretary. >> reporter:. i. >> i think john kerry would be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues. >> reporter: it is a list that includes michelle flournoy who held the number three job at the pentagon. ashton carter is on the list, and former nebraska senator chuck hagel, a republican, could represent a reach across the aisle. >> we're in a much stronger position today as a country than we were in '07. >> reporter: treasury secretary tim geithner said he will stay at his post until at least inauguration. president obama's chief of staff jack lew is often named as a possible replacement. a poll

the senate foreign relations committee next year which could put him in a spot to grill susan rice if obama chooses her as his next secretary of state. as we've seen since the benghazi attack, mccain is one of rice's harshest critics. the two met late last month along with other senators to discuss rice's television appearances during the aftermath of those september 11th attacks in libya. rice hoped to put mccain's fears at ease but he came out of the meetings saying he only had more questions than when he went in. mccain spokesman says he will seek a spot on the international affairs panel which oversees the state department. republicans have said they would rather see john kerry as circumstance -- secretary of state over susan rice. hillary clinton is still polling very well after her stint with the state department and democrats are practically begging to see her in 2016. according to the latest abc news, "washington post" poll, 57% of people say they would support her run. although abc is reporting today she said she'l
